Traveling With Family? Finding Great Places to Stay

But when it comes to finding lodging once we arrive to our destination, I quickly regret not making better traveling plans ahead of time. It's not fun driving around a new town, city or state looking for a hotel or bed and breakfast when we should be enjoying ourselves instead. 4 Travel Tips For Seniors

Blog

It can be a lot of fun to travel during your retirement years. You now have the time to see all the places you never had time to before, and can enjoy your time there instead of feeling forced to return for work on Monday. Before you head off on your next adventure, follow these important tips for planning and preparing for your trip.

1. Keep Your Safety and Security in Check

No matter how safe your destination is, you should never put yourself at risk. Someone might look at you as a good victim for their next crime, so always be careful and cautious. Do not give your personal or travel information to anyone you don't know. Instead of wearing a purse, put your money and passport in a money belt. This can be hidden underneath your jacket, sweater, or shirt.

You can also get a wallet that is hidden underneath your clothing and held by a neck cord. If you carry a wallet, don't keep it in your jacket pocket or pants pocket. When traveling by train, bus or airplane, keep your carry-on bag between your feet where you can keep an eye on it.

2. Stay in a Cabin or Condominium

To increase your comfort, consider staying in a cabin or condominium when you travel, as opposed to a traditional hotel room. Hotel rooms tend to be small and rarely have the features you are likely looking for. Additionally, hotels can get loud, especially if you are staying in a location that is popular for tourists. Instead, rent a cabin if you are staying in a mountainous area, or get a condominium when staying in a downtown or coastal area. Most resorts offer these special accommodations, and you will be glad you thought of it. Frio River Cabin Rentals is a business you can contact for reservations in this regard.

3. Look Into Special Services

Most resorts and hotels will work with you if you have any special needs. For example, if you need a walk-in shower as opposed to a step-in shower, ask for a room that offers this.  If you are taking the train, they will have special seating for seniors and disabled persons, which can be a lot more comfortable for you. If you need special dietary meals, require safety bars in the bathroom, or need wheelchair clearance, do not be afraid to ask when making your reservations.

4. Let Your Doctor Know You Are Traveling

It is always a good idea to check in with your doctor before you travel. You should have a routine check-up to be sure you are in proper medical health for a trip. Discuss any health concerns you have, and go over your medications. Make sure you have written doctor permission for all medications you bring with you, and that you refill prescriptions before you leave.
